Taipei-based CHOCO TV announced its collaboration with Singapore’s WAWA Pictures. CHOCO TV is the first Taiwanese Over-the-top-content (OTT) provider of its kind to stage a Singapore production in Taiwan after it beat out China’s iQiYi.com and US-based Netflix on Google Play Taiwan in March.
OTT refers to film and television content provided via a high-speed Internet connection rather than a cable or satellite provider in the control or distribution of the content. It is a trend that both Netflix and iQiYi.com started to produce their own content for better integration of marketing and advertising business solutions.
CHOCO TV is a similar provider and is one of the most promising players in Taiwan. It is a division of CHOCOLABS – an APP brand developer founded in 2011. In its early stage, CHOCO TV served as a platform for video watching and this year will begin production of three drama series and one co-production of its own.
CHOCOLABS began as an APP developer in 2011 and then moved into the video and entertainment platform business in 2014. To date, CHOCOLABS developed sixty-two APP projects. Nearly half of its projects reached the top charts of the app stores.
With its long-standing proven track record, CHOCOLABS has 1.8 million unique visitors every month and the total number of downloads has reached 12 million. Likewise, its latest project CHOCOBEE – a cosmetics and fashion app – is expected to be one of the leading apps in Southeast Asia.
In order to transform their video and entertainment business from a platform into a leading provider, CHOCOLABS has invested more than 60% of its resources into drama production and even hired one of the most experienced senior producers, Chang Ting-Fei, to head the Content Department, a team of 7 people.
“There’s a particular issue in traditional broadcasting companies in Taiwan concerning copyright trading, so they carefully choose the topic of the production that limits their development. We (CHOCO TV) can cover those genres that they wanted to do but have not realized such as homosexual, horror, and detective, etc.,” she said in a previous interview.
CHOCO TV grows their business model based on the production side of programs and copyright trading as traditional broadcasting companies but without countries’ border. Since its inception from September, CHOCO TV has more than one million downloads. Currently, customers can select from 150 videos from Taiwan to Korea, and from Japan to China.
“The internet is not restricted by its regional limitations. You can watch it on demand. There are people who also like dramas from Southeast Asia. Having collaborated with WAWA Pictures, we will be able to offer more”, Deputy of CHOCO TV’s Southeast Asia Business Development and Copyright, Lin Chia-Yun indicated.
WAWA Pictures is one of the leading independent media production companies in Singapore. Established in 2007, WAWA Pictures has markets in China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Cambodia. This time, CHOCO TV has contracted with nearly 200 hours video. It is expected to grow more audiences in more regions beyond Singapore and Taiwan.
