Gogoro CEO Horace Luke is a very busy person these days, spending one-third of his time traveling abroad and clocking 9AM to 9PM days when he’s in Taiwan.
Nearly a year and a half after launching his re-imagined electric scooter with a battery swapping ecosystem at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, he’s been approached by leaders from 20 countries and major cities in Europe, Asia and Africa.
He says next year will be an important turning point for Gogoro, a test to see if the company’s business model in Taiwan can be successfully transplanted into foreign markets.
Gogoro’s entrance into Europe will be spearheaded by a cooperative venture with Germany’s largest automotive machinery company, the Bosch Group, and they will launch the eScooter sharing COUP service in Berlin.
"They vetted hundreds of manufacturers around the world before finally deciding to cooperate with us," said Luke.
The deal is an affirmation of Gogoro's cutting edge technology and will help ensure more contracts with international partners in the future.
It will also help achieve economies of scale and lower the all-important figure of scooter cost.
While Luke’s market is undoubtedly overseas, his inspiration is entirely local, going back to 2007 when he came to Taiwan to work as chief innovation officer for HTC, one of the world’s leading smart phone makers.
He got a firsthand look at the emissions from scooters and cars which inspired him to take action.
"In 2012, 7 million people died from air pollution with 5.9 million being Asian.
This shows that Asia's air quality is particularly bad," he said.
Luke’s passion to improve Asia’s air quality has resulted in Gogoro being invited to a number of international conferences, and the company has attracted international interest.
This has included appearances at the United Nations Climate Summit in Paris and an international motorcycle show in Milan.
Luke’s commitment to positioning the brand in international markets will help ensure the affordability of Gogoro’s electric scooters.
His concept for Gogoro extends beyond the manufacturing of electric scooters.
The firm is fundamentally a technology and energy company.
Furthermore, the company merges technology and data, measuring a user’s distance traveled as well as their preferred battery swap location.
All of this information helps the company better modify its service to aid current and future users.
Big data analysis puts the company on good footing to make use of future transportation and consumption trends.
Luke also believes that society will need to change its ways given the environmental impact of transportation vehicles and the need for greater energy efficiency.
"In the future, we will have a pressing need for energy, and I want to change the world by addressing this trend.
This is what inspired me to go out and do something different," he said.
And so far his invention is taking root both in Taiwan and abroad.
"Now when I walk on the road, as long as I hear one of our scooters I become very happy,” he said.
Soon this same joy will be able to be felt on the streets of Berlin and other international capitals.
