Taiwanese golf star Yani Tseng of Taiwan will work as a brand ambassador for Golface, a fast-growing entrant in sports technology.
Tseng will become a brand ambassador for Golface in trade, print and online advertising for the company’s mobile apps, according to the announcement April 10 at a news conference in Taiwan. Tseng also will make golf training videos for Golface app users.
This tie-up comes as sports teams are embracing technology to boost performance and engage fans, Golface founder and CEO Ian Liao said. Tseng, a former top LPGA golfer known for her master of the game at a young age, is the firm’s first brand ambassador.
“In 2011 when Tseng took hold of the world number one ranking, I told a group of students during a presentation with a picture of Tseng on my first slide, ‘if Taiwan has the capability to nurture a golf world number one, what’s stopping us from nurturing the world’s best golfing software company?” wrote Liao on a Facebook post April 13.
The 5-year-old app developer wanted to improve golfing through his apps. Liao, now 37, had persuaded a group of friends to join his new business venture. Its staff of 18 now works in the Taiwan high-tech center of Hsinchu.
Of the total 64 golf courses in Taiwan, more than 20 golf courses work with Golface, sometimes as clients. Those courses are using the app to improve players performance and offer discounts.
The Golface app, available on Android and iOS in three languages, offers precise GPS-enabled distances between a player’s golf ball and holes on the golf course. It keeps score and suggests based on relative distances how to take the next shot. There are instructional videos, too. Players can install the app on their smartwatches for advanced functions and features, as well.
Golface is weathering fierce competition from outside of Taiwan, including from many older golfing apps such as Golf GPS & Scorecard, Golf GPS Rangefinder, Golfshot, and Hole19.
To expand its reach, Golface set up a Japan office last year to arrange golf vacation packages. It partners with Nishitetsu Travel agency in Japan, Liao said. The app developer plans to arrange more golf tours and sightseeing packages to Japan as they become more popular among Taiwanese.
An updated version of the Golface app will launch in September with training videos that feature Tseng.
Tseng, 29, trained as a golfer from age 6 and reached a performance peak in 2011 when she won the LPGA Championship.
Tseng hit some low points in her career over the past several years but hopes for a comeback. She is now busy preparing for the LPGA season in the United States.
