Taiwan has recruited more than 400 foreign professionals since a corresponding law took effect last February. An "employment gold card" was issued to each of these expats, removing potential hurdles to stay and work in the country.
The card is supported by the Act for the Recruitment and Employment of Foreign Professionals, the government's legal attempt to attract foreign talent. It integrates resident visa, work permit, Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), and re-entry permit and allows expats to enjoy a number of benefits, including tax deduction, extended visa validity, and earlier enrollment in national health insurance.
As the National Development Council points out, until now, more than half (53%) of the cardholders work in economics whilst 21% and 12% are employed in tech and cultural industries, respectively. In regard to nationality, a quarter of these professionals come from the United States, followed by 11% from Hong Kong and 9% from the UK.
Steve Chen, one of the co-founders of Youtube and the first professional who was issued with this card, has returned to Taiwan to link local entrepreneurs to global resources.
