Global VC firm 500 Global (formerly 500 Startups) debut the first demo day of 500 Global Accelerator Taiwan with Taiwan Tech Arean(TTA). This demo day is presented online and used Filo’s technology, which provides the solution for collaborative virtual events, to build a virtual meeting space, bringing people the same experience as a physical event.
In the virtual meeting space, every startup has a virtual booth that attendees can visit. There are introductions and pitch decks for every startup. Furthermore, attendees can book a chatting time with the startup team in the booth directly.
Representing 8 regions, the first batch has 13 Taiwanese startups and 7 international startups. Total 20 startups present solutions in a wide range of sectors including MarTech, Software & SaaS, EdTech, and Consumer.
The eight-week accelerator program received close to 200 applications, before narrowing it down to 13 Taiwanese and 7 international startups. The founders come from Taiwan, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, the United States, Indonesia, Guatemala and Malaysia. The program is designed to accelerate early-stage, tech-enabled startups looking to expand to Taiwan and the region. The startups received coaching from 500 Global’s network of mentors, and underwent rigorous training in growth fundamentals, sales and marketing best practices, and preparation for capital growth.
“Startups and founders in Taiwan need basically the same thing that entrepreneurs need anywhere around the world, which is access to market and access to global capital,” said Tony Wang, managing partner of 500 Global.
“We believe Taiwan is a growing hub of talent, innovation, and opportunity. This accelerator shows that by providing dedicated support and resources, we can help startups think and scale globally. Through this program, we have seen tremendous growth and hunger from founders, and this inspires us to further build the community within Taiwan and cement our commitment to growing an ecosystem in Taiwan,” said Carrie Liauw, Regional Director of 500 Global’s APAC programs.
“We are proud to see how much the startups have grown in a short period of time. With this first batch, we see Taiwan’s startup ecosystem benefiting from 500 Global’s expertise and resources,” says Andrea T. J. Hsu, Director General, Department of Academia-Industry Collaboration and Science Park Affairs, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST).
“For years, Taiwan was well-known as a major chip manufacturer, but we are now making significant strides in the digital space. Our partnership with 500 Startups plays a central role in our quest to build a world-class startup ecosystem,” says a TTA Representative.
500 Global’s partnership with MoST and TTA represents they bet on Taiwan startup ecosystem and they will continue to support Taiwan to establish itself as a global hub for tech innovation.
