Are you stressed or in a slump? Most people don’t care about mental health status enough so they got caught in a loop. This digital app Here Hear produced by BambooDD aims to offer a safety net for those who are blue, by allowing them to speak out their sorrow on an audio platform like Clubhouse. Over 100 thousand users have downloaded the app and confided their troubles to the app. To further increase mental health, the app does sentimental analysis for users based on the audio and offers mood-booster suggestions accordingly.
Mental health issues got buried all the time, overlooked amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. This widespread negligence has left countless individuals feeling isolated, without a safe space to express their feelings or seek support. Although an astonishing 350 million people worldwide suffer from mental health issues, a staggering 75% of them have not received treatment. This negligence is not limited to a specific region or country; even in Taiwan, out of 700,000 individuals facing mental health challenges, most of them have not sought therapy or medical help.
“When I was suffering from depression, I got seriously affected both physically and mentally. Moreover, I lost faith in nearly everything,” said the founder and CEO of BambooDD, Lynia Huang. As a victim of mental issue herself and with a background in psychology and social work, Huang decided to create this safety net for those who are depressed and don’t know who to turn to.
Recognizing this gap and understanding the potential of technology to bridge it, BambooDD has risen to the occasion. They have developed an AI-driven application designed to foster emotional well-being by building a loving community.
The Here Hear app operates on a fundamental psychological principle — that hearing others' stories can provide perspective and help individuals caught in the throes of negative emotions. When someone is deeply mired in their own struggles, hearing about the experiences of others, mainly if they are sorrowful or similar, can help them step outside their own distressing thoughts.
What's unique about Here Hear is that it acknowledges negative stories don't necessarily augment negativity in people with depression. Quite the contrary, they can provide a sense of shared experience and validation, proving to be a form of solace rather than a source of additional burden. This leads to high user engagement, as many people find comfort in listening to others' stories, appreciating that they are not alone in their struggles.
In essence, BambooDD's Here Hear serves as an empathetic sanctuary for its users, enabling them to navigate their emotional states with the aid of others experiences.
In the digital age, AI-driven tools have revolutionized various industries, and mental health is no exception. Recognizing the power of voice, BambooDD has incorporated voice sentiment analysis into their app — a technology initially designed for customer service to detect emotions like anger or levels of depression.
BambooDD's pivot in utilizing this technology stems from their impressive database, boasting 11,626 fresh personal stories (posts) and a whopping 26,583 minutes of total voice content. This rich repository of emotional expression allows the startup to analyze and understand varied emotional states. Based on this analysis, BambooDD can proactively suggest activities designed to channel users towards healthier, more positive emotional states.
Voice sentiment analysis stands out due to its high level of privacy, convenience, objectivity, and multi-parameter analytics. According to the CEO and co-founder of BambooDD Lynia Huang, the system's assessment criteria include factors such as speech rate, tone, and breathing frequency. BambooDD's tech team uses these voice recordings, laden with emotions such as sadness and anger, as valuable data points for the AI to analyze the voice wave patterns. Through deep learning methodologies, an emotional analysis model has been constructed, transforming raw data into actionable insights.
By providing an avenue where users can express their emotions and subsequently receive tailored recommendations, BambooDD ensures that users aren't just heard but are also guided towards better mental health. BambooDD's internal tests have demonstrated an impressive accuracy rate of nearly 80% for their voice sentiment analysis.
Currently, in a bid to further validate and enhance their technology's credibility, BambooDD is collaborating with Taipei Medical University Hospital. The technology is being provided to healthcare professionals, particularly those operating in high-stress environments, allowing the hospital to verify its precision and publish corresponding research. Such partnerships aim to bolster market trust in the effectiveness and reliability of BambooDD's AI-driven solutions in addressing mental health challenges.
Operating primarily with a dual business model, BambooDD effectively blends B2C and B2B approaches. Their subscription-based service, tailored for individual users, has already achieved a remarkable milestone with 100,000 downloads. On the B2B front, they sign annual contracts with enterprises. A notable collaboration is with the National Defense Department's Psychological Health Center, leveraging BambooDD's offerings for the mental well-being of nearly 200,000 active-duty military personnel.
Additionally, BambooDD has plans to introduce a two-way promotional model with hospitals. This partnership would mean that hospitals recommend more users to the platform, and in instances where specialized treatment is needed, BambooDD could refer users back to the hospitals. The app also plans to integrate suicide detection and referral features. Should the voice detection system identify potential suicide risks in a user's tone or words, an SOS helpline will promptly appear, guiding the individual to relevant NGOs equipped to provide immediate support.
In an effort to cater to the vast Chinese-speaking market, they're focusing on refining and enhancing the features of their app. Serving as a primary platform offering voice detection services in Chinese, BambooDD primarily targets native Chinese speakers. Currently, while 50% of their user base is in Taiwan, the other half comprises Taiwanese expatriates, with a majority in countries such as India, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Identifying a significant gap in mental health resources for overseas populations — particularly expatriates — BambooDD recognizes the untapped potential.
With no existing dedicated mental health services for this expatriate market, BambooDD is poised to fill this void, making expansion into the overseas Chinese market a major objective in their future endeavors.
