The event showcased over 400 participating startups, including more than 90 international startups from 16 different countries.
Within the global pavilion, Hong Kong, Japan, and Malaysia had the highest representation, followed by the United States and Singapore. The exhibition featured 25 industry pavilions and participation from 5 domestic and international accelerators.
In terms of activities, there were 154 startup Demo Pitches, including the Meet Neo Star Demo Show, AI Joint Innovation Day, entrepreneur talks, international entrepreneur talks, Dragons Chamber, and sessions by organizations like the Ministry of Culture, Qualcomm, and Chunghwa Telecom. The event facilitated 513 business matchmaking sessions with over 160 investment representatives in attendance. Additionally, there were 82 trend forums, salon shares, expert dialogues, and startup competitions on the main stage and in various special areas, showcasing a diverse range of topics and insights.
The Meet Neo Star Demo Show, a key event of Meet Taipei, concluded with a grand ceremony on December 1st. Organized by Business Next Media and its branch brand, Meet, the event is known for its influential status in Taiwan's startup circle. After a thorough evaluation by 19 prominent domestic and international judges, three startups emerged as the top winners. Dentall, SPOT (Superior Performance Technology), and Instill AI were awarded the first, second, and third prizes respectively in the 2023 Meet Neo Star Jury Awards.
The Meet Neo Star event, which has been held annually since 2011, is a platform for showcasing Taiwan's startup talent. The Business Next media team, through their routine work of discovery, interviews, and follow-ups, recommends 30 startups each year from a list of 250, highlighting the teams that are most deserving of attention and indicative of Taiwan’s startup trends.
The biggest winner Dentall, founded in 2015, has grown to be a large dental information integration platform, boasting over 14,500 registered members, including approximately 50% of the nation's dentists. In 2022, they established a new corporate headquarters, Dentaverse, consolidating resources and energy from seven years of operation. This includes an AI and systems research center, the Star Dentist Clinic, a digital dental lab, SPACE Dental Education and Training Center, and a photography studio. Extending its services from online to offline, Dentall is now expanding its reach from dental professionals and clinics to the general public, aiming to fulfill its vision of a B2B2C global dental information service platform.
The second prize winner went to SPOT, one-stop AI live broadcasting workstation. SPOT has eliminated the dependence on manpower and hardware, greatly improving the efficiency of live broadcasting and short-form video publishing while digitizing all video assets. The platform caters to clients with high-volume live broadcasting needs, such as news media, sports events, and e-commerce platforms. SPOT provides a user-friendly live streaming system that requires no additional hardware; users can begin broadcasting with just a smartphone, saving tens of thousands in costs per event. Additionally, SPOT integrates GPT-3.5 API to generate transcripts during live broadcasts and provide live closed captions (CC). "We are the only system in the country that offers LIVE CC captions," says Jagger Hong, highlighting SPOT's unique position in the market.
Instill AI, securing the third prize at the Meet Neo Star Demo Show, is pioneering the way organizations handle complex unstructured data. With the vast amounts of data generated from audio, chats, images, and video files, extracting actionable insights can be a daunting task. Traditional ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) processes are often time-intensive and costly. Instill AI's open-source tool simplifies this process, offering a streamlined solution for the unstructured data ETL pipeline.
The 2023 edition of Neo Star focused on seven key areas: AI, ESG, digital tools, 5G and IoT, health tech, enterprise services, and platform services. Notably, AI startups constituted 25% of this year's Neo Star, reflecting the current popularity of AI applications. The winning teams, all belonging to the AI application category, further underscore this trend, demonstrating the significant impact and potential of AI in the startup ecosystem.
Katie Chen, the CEO of Business Next media, emphasized the evolution witnessed over the past 13 years. Since its inception, Startup Meetup has interviewed over 1,500 teams, cumulatively recognizing 390 Neo Stars. “This growth in numbers is not just a quantitative change but also a qualitative transformation,” said Chen, “the involvement of various entities including the government, corporations, venture capitalists, accelerators, non-profit organizations, and media has played a crucial role in enriching and diversifying the startup ecosystem.”
Ming-Hsin Kung, the Chairman of the National Development Council, highlighted Taiwan's impressive growth in the startup sector during his speech at the event. He noted that since 2015, the number of startups in Taiwan has nearly doubled, increasing from 2,300 to 4,700. This growth signifies that Taiwan has firmly established the initial phase of its startup ecosystem, moving from zero to one. The next challenge, according to Kung, is to scale from one to a hundred, with "internationalization" being the key focus.
Meet Taipei, by bringing together startups from both domestic and international spheres, serves as an ideal platform for these companies to interact and learn from each other. The National Development Council is actively supporting this endeavor by helping startups understand and meet international market demands through various programs.
Moreover, in a move to further facilitate this global expansion, Kung announced plans to establish permanent bases in Silicon Valley and Tokyo by 2024. These bases are intended to provide Taiwanese startups with rapid access to overseas resources, significantly aiding their global outreach and development.
