To address the impact of generative AI on technology and ensure Taiwan's continued leadership in semiconductor manufacturing, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) organized the "Semiconductor Innovation and Industry Startup Summit" on May 14th, 2024. During this event, Tsung-Tsong Wu, Minister without Portfolio and head of the NSTC, unveiled the "IC Taiwan Grand Challenge." This initiative builds upon the Taiwan Chip-based Industrial Innovation Program (Taiwan CbI), which focuses on IC design and semiconductor-related applications. The challenge aims to attract global tech talents to contribute their ideas by inviting teams to Taiwan to propose research, development, and commercialization plans.
Deputy Minister Shien-Quey Kao of the National Development Council, along with Honorary Chairman Stan Shih of the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), Chief Marketing Officer of SEMI, and President of SEMI Taiwan, Terry Tsao, attended the event to show their support for the Taiwan CbI. The IC Taiwan Grand Challenge positions Taiwan as an ideal destination for global talents, particularly attracting startups and academic groups focusing on "IC design innovations'' and "chip-based innovative applications." Minister Wu highlighted the pivotal role of chips in driving global tech industry growth and emphasized Taiwan's strength as a key player in semiconductors. The Taiwan CbI initiative aims to leverage semiconductor resources for innovation, enhancing Taiwan's global tech standing.
The NSTC has emphasized the need to attract global talent, startups, and investments to Taiwan, recognizing the strength of Taiwan's semiconductor industry. Introducing the IC Taiwan Grand Challenge aims to address this imperative by offering a platform open to startups, companies, research institutions, and individuals worldwide interested in collaborating with Taiwan's semiconductor sector. The goal is not only to attract talent and investments but also to encourage innovation and foster new partnerships. By leveraging Taiwan's strengths in semiconductors and AI, the NSTC envisions Taiwan leading the way in tech development for the next decade.
The competition focuses on ideas like "IC design innovations" and "chip-based applications," looking for advanced technology and ideas. It's important that these ideas fit Taiwan's needs and plans, while also being creative and innovative. Selected teams will get funds, workspace, mentorship, and support to help them succeed and contribute to Taiwan's tech scene.
The "2024 IC Taiwan Grand Challenge" invites global talent to join, with the first round ending on June 30, 2024. More details are available on the official website.
