To foster innovation, NVIDIA launched the NVIDIA Inception Program in 2016, aiming to connect cutting-edge technology with startup potential. Traditionally known for its gaming hardware, NVIDIA has bigger plans. As a platform company, NVIDIA supports developers and startups using AI to revolutionize various industries.
According to Richard Kerris, Vice President and Developer Relations and General Manager of M&E at NVIDIA, “Developers not only need ideas, but also help and support to bring those ideas to life and market them. Startups are the same.”
This insight underscores NVIDIA’s mission to empower startups through the Inception Program by providing essential resources and support.
The driving force behind the NVIDIA Inception Program is to create a nurturing environment for startups. By providing resources and support, NVIDIA catalyzes the development of innovative solutions that can transform markets and industries. With over 20,000 startups currently in the program, it’s clear there is massive demand for such an initiative.
Richard Kerris highlights the critical role of startups, noting that they often lack computing power and marketing resources—areas where NVIDIA excels. The Inception Program offers services such as discounts on NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute (DLI) courses, hardware and software products, cloud credits from partners, customer introductions, and access to investors through Inception Capital Connect. These resources help startups quickly build products and validate them in the market.
The NVIDIA Inception Program offers numerous benefits designed to accelerate startup growth. Members receive discounts on hardware, cloud credits, and access to both online and direct courses through the Deep Learning Institute. Additionally, NVIDIA hosts conferences and maintains a blog, providing continuous learning and networking opportunities. The program is seen as the first step towards success for many startups, giving them a solid foundation in the competitive tech landscape.
Startups also gain access to NVIDIA’s extensive ecosystem, including potential investment opportunities from NVIDIA or its venture capital partners. Furthermore, startups can collaborate with NVIDIA’s sales partners, expanding their reach and customer base.
“Growth for startups may not be immediate, but we view it as an investment,” says Kerris. He explains that just like all major tech giants today, growth requires patience and a willingness to go through necessary processes. The NVIDIA Inception Program reduces financial and resource pressures for early-stage startups, with the time and energy invested eventually resulting in excellent products and services. A notable example is Wayve, a London-based autonomous driving unicorn that recently raised $1.05 billion from SoftBank, NVIDIA, and Microsoft.
For instance, the program has seen significant growth in Taiwan, where the number of participating startups is expected to double in the coming months. This expansion is a testament to the program's success and the increasing interest from startups worldwide. Looking ahead, NVIDIA plans to keep expanding its Inception Program, aiming to have a hundred thousand developers involved soon.
Richard Kerris advises, “Ensure you have a product ready to go to market and that the market needs your product. We’re here to help you.” He emphasizes that the most crucial aspect for startups is understanding market demand. In the age of AI, Kerris points out that “clear market demand” is more important than the technology itself.
“AI has lowered the barriers to development, democratizing technology,” Kerris says. Previously, product development required programming skills, but with generative AI, creating a product only requires the ability to give commands (prompts). This shift has reversed the entire development process.
For startups aiming to make their mark, understanding the market and the customer is vital. Kerris states, “Many great ideas have disappeared because they emerged too early or without market demand.” The NVIDIA Inception Program is more than just support; it’s a partnership designed to propel startups towards success, ensuring they enter the ecosystem and go to market.
