Have you ever tried vegan meat? As the world becomes more aware of its environmental impact, the need for sustainable food is more important than ever. That’s where ProMeat, a startup from India, comes in.
ProMeat is changing the way we think about protein with plant-based meat alternatives that are not just a substitute for meat but a tasty and sustainable option.
Debabrata Das, CEO, and Pranjuli Garg, CTO, explain that the meat industry harms the environment with high CO2 emissions and excessive water use. ProMeat addresses this by reducing CO2 emissions by 90% and water usage by 88% compared to traditional meat production.
ProMeat addresses some of today’s biggest challenges by offering a solution that's both sustainable and healthy. A Gallup poll shows that 4% of Americans are vegetarian and 1% are vegan, with many others open to trying plant-based products.
ProMeat’s success comes from its use of wet extrusion technology, which creates textured vegetable protein that's high in protein and cholesterol-free. This process results in a product that’s not only good for you but also better for the environment.
When asked about expanding to Taiwan, Pranjuli Garg highlighted that Taiwan's large vegetarian population and supportive government make it an appealing market for plant-based products. "We were often advised to go to the US, but Taiwan stood out for its unique market dynamics," she said. "The government here is very supportive of startups, and there’s a strong base of consumers who are already inclined towards vegetarian and plant-based diets."
The company is also considering growth into Singapore and Southeast Asia, where interest in plant-based diets is increasing, and where they plan to launch their innovative products.
What distinguishes ProMeat in the plant-based market is its use of just four core ingredients : peas, mung beans, soybeans, and oats to create products that focus on taste, texture, and nutrition.
“We focus on technology, which helps us adjust our product formulations according to the ingredients we have,” says Pranjuli Garg. This flexibility allows ProMeat’s products to cater to various tastes and dietary needs, making the company adaptable in the global food industry.
ProMeat’s product lineup is tailored not only for vegetarians but also for flexitarians (people who mostly eat vegetarian but occasionally consume meat). In India, where 70% of the population falls into this category, this approach is especially relevant. "Our products are intended to complement the diet, not replace it," emphasizes Pranjuli Garg. This distinction helps ProMeat appeal to a wider audience, including those who may not usually consider plant-based options.
ProMeat is quickly growing in India, working with more than 50 restaurants in Mumbai. Their product range includes everything from nuggets and burger patties to kebabs and sausages, all designed to cater to the diverse and rich culinary traditions of the region. These products offer a healthier, cholesterol-free alternative that maintains rich flavor, going beyond just being meat substitutes.
ProMeat’s vision goes beyond business success. Their slogan, "ProMeat is 100% plant-based and 100% tasty," reflects their broader mission to offer sustainable, delicious food that benefits both consumers and the planet. Currently, they are seeking to raise $0.5 million in funding to support their expansion efforts.
In a world where every choice matters, ProMeat provides a chance to eat well and contribute to positive change. Whether you’re a dedicated vegetarian, a flexitarian, or simply aiming for more sustainable options, ProMeat invites you to be part of their journey. The future of food isn’t just about what’s on your plate, it’s about making choices that benefit both your health and the planet.
