On a bright day at the golf course, K.J. Yang, founder and CEO of Kura Care, felt unexpectedly dizzy and feverish. A doctor's visit revealed the devastating news: leukemia.
Over the next few years, Yang faced a grueling journey through chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and endless uncertainty. But his battle with illness sparked a new purpose. Yang realized how critical preventive care could be, leading him to establish Kura Care, a startup dedicated to shifting healthcare from reactive treatments to proactive, patient-centered prevention.
Yang’s journey began long before his health crisis. In 2002, he moved from Taiwan to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. at UC San Diego with a full scholarship from Qualcomm, where he specialized in AI and product management. He played a key role at Qualcomm, turning AI research into real-world video technologies. However, his battle with leukemia in 2011—marked by relapses and complex treatments—changed his perspective on life and health, pushing him toward healthcare innovation.
K.J. Yang often felt that the healthcare system’s approach was reactive and outdated, driving him to seek a new path. He briefly joined Qualcomm Life, working on a medical database project similar to Google Health, but quickly realized his passion was in telemedicine, believing it could revolutionize patient care. In 2018, Yang founded Kura Care to focus on preventive and remote healthcare, filling gaps he saw in traditional care models.
Based in San Diego with a branch in Taiwan, Kura Care aims to transform healthcare from treating diseases after they occur to preventing them, especially for chronic issues like heart disease. Using AI-driven remote monitoring and data analysis, Kura Care helps patients and doctors detect problems early, offering a proactive approach to healthcare that can keep conditions from worsening. The platform monitors vital signs, analyzes patient data, and provides personalized health advice, enabling patients to manage their conditions more effectively.
Kura Care’s strength lies in its ability to turn real-time health data into actionable insights. Its AI algorithms analyze patient health metrics and offer tailored recommendations, helping individuals manage their conditions proactively. For heart patients, this continuous monitoring is crucial in preventing readmissions and improving overall quality of life. Kura Care’s technology bridges the gap between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring ongoing support even after hospital discharge.
Navigating the healthcare landscape hasn’t been easy. Yang learned valuable lessons from industry giants like IBM Watson Health, which struggled with a technology-first approach lacking practical application. Yang emphasized that successful healthcare innovation requires a focus on real-world use cases—integrating clinical insights, patient needs, and operational efficiencies. Unlike larger tech companies, Kura Care prioritizes the practical needs of patients and clinicians, ensuring its solutions are truly impactful.
For K.J. Yang, Kura Care is deeply personal. His experiences with illness and navigating the healthcare system inspired a company dedicated to preventing others from facing similar challenges. By focusing on personalized, preventive care, Kura Care is setting a new standard in healthcare—one where early intervention and continuous support redefine patient care.
“You only truly grasp the value of health when faced with the end of life,” says K.J. Yang. For him, healthcare starts and ends with the patient, and through Kura Care, he aims to make preventive care accessible and effective for everyone.
