According to Bloomberg, AI chip innovator Kneron Inc. is in discussions to raise $300 million in its latest funding round, potentially reaching a valuation of $1 billion. If successful, this will make Kneron Taiwan’s first pre-IPO unicorn to achieve such a milestone, marking a significant moment not only for the company but also for the broader Taiwanese tech landscape.
Founded in 2015 by former Qualcomm engineer Albert Liu, Kneron specializes in developing AI processors designed for a wide range of consumer devices, including surveillance cameras and electric vehicles. The company’s neural processing unit (NPU) is a groundbreaking technology, allowing chips to be modular and scalable like Lego blocks to fit various applications. This versatility makes the NPU particularly well-suited for edge devices and data centers alike. Kneron’s chips are already being used in products by leading companies such as Hon Hai Precision’s electric vehicles and South Korean firm Hanwha Vision’s surveillance cameras.
Kneron’s fundraising track record is equally impressive, with previous rounds backed by industry giants such as Qualcomm Ventures, Sequoia Capital China (now HongShan), iPhone maker Hon Hai Precision, and Horizons Ventures, founded by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing. This latest $300 million round, which is expected to be the last before the company goes public in 2025, underscores Kneron’s growing prominence in the global AI chip market. As part of its growth strategy, Kneron signed a letter of intent to acquire Spark I Acquisition Corporation in a reverse merger, a move that would further solidify its position ahead of its anticipated Nasdaq listing.
Reports also surfaced this week that Kneron is exploring the acquisition of another company in the hospitality software sector. This, along with its ambitious plan to establish a regional office and an R&D lab in Saudi Arabia, highlights Kneron’s forward-looking strategy to capitalize on the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative and contribute to its growing digital economy.
Kneron is the latest in a line of AI chip firms seeking expansion in Saudi Arabia, joining companies like US-based SambaNova Systems and South Korea’s Rebellions. With Saudi Arabia positioning itself as a global tech hub, Kneron’s expansion there aligns perfectly with its goals of global market penetration and innovation leadership.
As Kneron prepares for its IPO, this final pre-IPO funding round presents a unique opportunity for investors to be part of the company’s growth trajectory. With its cutting-edge NPU technology and strong foothold in the rapidly expanding edge AI market, Kneron is well-positioned to tap into what Bloomberg Intelligence predicts could be a market that will more than triple the size of cloud-based AI by 2032. However, negotiations for the current round are ongoing, and the company has yet to disclose which investors are participating or how much has been secured.
