Mark Birch’s path to becoming an entrepreneur wasn’t exactly planned. From his early days dabbling in engineering to his role at AWS, to his latest startup venture in Taiwan with the support of the Gold Card program, Mark’s story is full of twists.
Along the way, he’s built communities, connected people, and spotted potential where others might not look. Now, he’s bringing that drive to Taiwan, where the Gold Card program offers a welcoming base for foreign entrepreneurs, to work on his latest project, a stealth startup with a focus on building something meaningful.
Mark’s journey began in university, where he was studying electrical engineering. “Honestly, I didn’t find engineering that fascinating,” he admits with a laugh. “I found people problems more interesting.” This curiosity led him into student leadership, and later, to a job as a commodities trader in New York City.
While working in finance, Mark noticed that all the excitement was happening out West in Silicon Valley. “People my age were building amazing things there,” he says. Inspired by this, he took a leap of faith, learned to code, and joined a small tech company in New York. This move set him on the path to launching his own HR tech startup, followed by a role at AWS, where he’d travel the globe, exploring startup communities and gaining a better understanding of what makes them thrive.
Through his travels, Taiwan eventually caught Mark’s attention. He first visited in 2022 to speak at the Meet Taipei conference, where he got a feel for the local startup ecosystem. “I first came here for business, but I fell in love with the culture,” he says, adding with a grin, “And let’s be honest, I love great foods.”
Mark was also impressed by Taiwan’s unique Gold Card program, which offers a structured visa for foreign talent. During a tour organized by the group 42 Geeks, he learned more about the Gold Card’s benefits from Jonathan Liao, one of its leaders. “I’d looked at similar programs worldwide, and the Taiwan Gold Card really stood out,” he explains. Taiwan, he realized, was not only a beautiful and affordable place to live but also a country actively welcoming entrepreneurs like him.
Beyond his own startup, Mark sees Taiwan as a perfect place for startups to grow. Thanks to cloud computing and the internet, startups don’t need to be based in Silicon Valley anymore. “When I started my first company over 15 years ago, everyone told me I had to move to Silicon Valley. But now? You can build anywhere,” he says.
He encourages other entrepreneurs to give Taiwan a serious look. “Get the Gold Card, spend time here, connect with groups like TTA and Startup Terrace. Taiwan’s a great place to live—with amazing food, a welcoming community, and a deep pool of talent.”
So, what is Mark building in Taiwan? While he’s still keeping details under wraps, he shares that his new venture is focused on creating real community impact. Mark has long believed in the power of community. “If you connect millions of people, incredible things can happen,” he explains, pointing to his past work at Stack Overflow, where developers come together to share knowledge.
But he noticed something missing. While many companies talk about “community,” few understand how to truly harness it. “There’s more to community than just boosting revenue,” he says. “It can improve customer service, talent recruitment, and retention. But we don’t have tools to measure that impact.” This missing piece is exactly what Mark aims to build—an approach that goes beyond simple numbers and taps into the real power of community.
To help companies foster and measure real community engagement, Mark is leveraging AI.
His new platform will employ AI to analyze community interactions, offering insights that companies can use to strengthen their relationships with users. For instance, the platform can track engagement trends over time, pinpoint what types of content drive the most discussion, and even suggest new ways for companies to interact with their communities. With these AI-driven insights, businesses can better understand what truly matters to their users and foster stronger, more meaningful connections.
Mark knows the journey won’t be easy. “The startup world is full of unpredictability. It’s like that quote from Mike Tyson: ‘Everyone has a plan until they’re punched in the face.’” For Mark, the biggest challenges will be building a team with the right talent and proving there’s a market for his idea.
Aside from his stealth startup, Mark is also working on the second edition of his book, Community in a Box. His plan is to settle fully in Taipei by January and get ready to launch his product’s first version, known as a Minimal Viable Product (MVP).
Mark’s journey is all about the power of community and following his curiosity. Now in Taiwan, he’s ready for a fresh challenge and eager to, in his words, “build something that truly matters.”
