In the era of digital transformation, while e-commerce platforms can easily track and analyze consumer behavior, traditional retail stores still struggle with paper receipts—making it challenging to understand customer preferences and provide seamless after-sales service. According to recent retail industry studies, over 90% of brick-and-mortar stores still rely on paper receipts, resulting in not only environmental waste but also missed opportunities for customer engagement and data insights.
This global shift toward digitization aligns with the vision of Singapore-based startup Pi-xcels, which sees digital receipts as more than transactional records. “What we are doing is more than just simplifying receipts; we view this process as creating an online-merge-offline (OMO) integration point,” shared Daniel Lim, the company’s founder and CEO.
In November, Pi-xcels completed a $2.7 million USD funding round led by Headline Asia. With partnerships that include prominent Taiwanese payment solution providers like Linten Technology and Intech, the startup is building a strong foundation to expand its reach globally.
Receipts are more than just proof of purchase; they are a goldmine of consumer data. Yet, while they could serve as tools for personalized marketing, Pi-xcels chooses not to brand itself as a marketing technology (MarTech) company.
“We focus on solving the pain points of offline transactions,” Daniel Lim explained. For example, online shoppers can easily initiate returns through a few taps on their phone. Offline shoppers, however, often face the cumbersome task of revisiting the store with a physical receipt in hand. Lim posed an alternative: “What if digital receipts could serve as a platform to make after-sales services for offline purchases as seamless as online transactions?”
The answer lies in Pi-xcels’ NFC-powered solution. At checkout, customers can tap their NFC-enabled smartphone to instantly receive a digital receipt. Unlike conventional receipts, these digital versions come loaded with value-added features, such as one-click access to customer service via WhatsApp or LINE, promotional campaigns, and links to loyalty programs or brand apps.
"With NFC, customers don’t need to download an app or share personal details like an email or phone number," Daniel Lim emphasized. "They can instantly receive their receipt and decide what to do with it later, ensuring privacy and convenience."
“In Western markets, NFC is becoming the norm, with companies like Visa and Mastercard pushing for its adoption. Even Alipay, known for its QR code-based system, recently introduced an NFC-based solution. This validates the direction we are heading,” Daniel Lim remarked.
Daniel Lim founded Pi-xcels after a personal experience shaped his path. While studying finance, economics, and computer science at Boston College, his plans after graduation took a hit due to the dot-com crash, the SARS outbreak, and the challenges of being a foreigner in the U.S.
"I sent out 50 job applications, and not one of them got a response," Daniel Lim recalled. Disheartened, he returned to Singapore to begin his career, where he encountered a recurring challenge through his father, a senior executive at Kao Corporation. Despite significant investments in R&D, the company’s lack of direct consumer insights meant that new products often failed to meet market demand.
"One major issue I observed was that companies invest billions in R&D, yet without consumer insights, their products often fail to sell," Lim said. “This inefficiency inspired me to create a solution where digital receipts help brands connect directly with consumers.”
Daniel Lim founded Pi-xcels in 2019, a year before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global commerce. The pandemic forced the team to focus on R&D, file patents, and seek partnerships with hardware manufacturers in Taiwan, where lockdown restrictions were less severe. “In entrepreneurship, you hear ‘no’ nine times out of ten,” Daniel Lim reflected. “These experiences shaped my resilience and determination to solve real-world problems.”
Taiwan has emerged as a crucial partner in Pi-xcels’ journey. With its thriving semiconductor and ICT industries, the region offers an ideal environment for hardware development and collaboration.
"Taiwan is a semiconductor hub with a thriving ICT industry. Its compact geography also means component sourcing and business discussions can often be completed within a day," Daniel Lim said, emphasizing the strategic advantages of setting up operations in Taiwan.
While the Taiwanese market presents unique challenges, such as its well-established e-invoice system, Lim expressed optimism. “The country’s unique e-invoice system requires deeper market research, but I am confident we can adapt our tools to tap into this market effectively,” he noted.
Pi-xcels is capitalizing on a growing global trend: the adoption of NFC technology. “With NFC, customers don’t need to download an app or share personal details like an email or phone number. They can instantly receive their receipt and decide what to do with it later, ensuring privacy and convenience,” Daniel Lim said.
As Pi-xcels establishes its R&D center in Taiwan and expands its network of partnerships, it’s clear that the company is committed to building a global presence. By addressing offline transaction challenges and aligning with emerging digital payment trends, Pi-xcels is positioned to transform how businesses and consumers interact in a rapidly digitizing world.
