The 11th of December 2024, The Asia Pacific Digital Identity Consortium (APDI), the first regional organization focused on cross-border digital identity, officially launched in Hakone, Japan. APDI is poised to lead the way in establishing a secure, standardized digital identity ecosystem across Asia-Pacific, bringing together key players like founding members ON (Japan) and Turing Space (Taiwan), alongside core members such as Accredit (Singapore), LORDSYSTEM (South Korea), and ZADA Solutions (Myanmar). With an ambitious roadmap to onboard teams from 36 countries by 2025, the consortium seeks to shape a secure digital identity framework that mirrors Europe’s European Digital Identity (EUDI) Regulation, aiming for a transnational digital identity economic zone in the region.
A critical member of the consortium, Turing Space is playing a pioneering role in the evolution of digital identity verification. Through its blockchain-powered solutions, Turing Space is redefining how institutions and governments verify essential documents. Its flagship product, Turing Certs, addresses the complex challenges of document verification, providing a secure and transparent way to authenticate everything from academic certificates to real estate contracts. Trusted by over 400 government bodies and authoritative institutions across 10 countries, Turing Certs guarantees the authenticity of important documents, safeguarding data from fraud and misuse.
In addition to Turing Certs, Turing Space has expanded its offerings with two innovative platforms: Turing Facts, a verification service for enterprise certifications such as food safety and cybersecurity, and the Turing Green renewable energy certificate usage declaration platform. These tools are designed to help businesses and governments ensure the legitimacy of certifications across industries, while supporting sustainable energy efforts through green power management reforms.
The launch of APDI signals a new era of cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on improving digital identity standards and regulatory alignment. In the coming year, the consortium plans to onboard representatives from 36 countries, aiming to create practical, cross-border use cases, particularly for migrant workers, international students, and travelers. The initiative is dedicated to establishing a standardized governance structure that will foster technical collaboration, streamline regulatory frameworks, and involve governments as advisors in the development of the digital identity infrastructure.
In a world where data breaches, identity theft, and the rise of generative AI threaten digital security, the need for secure, reliable digital identity verification has never been greater. While the European Union has made progress with the EUDI Regulation, the Asia-Pacific region faces distinct challenges, such as diverse languages, fragmented digital infrastructures, and cultural differences. APDI aims to overcome these hurdles by creating a unified platform that connects Asia-Pacific countries to global digital trust initiatives, ensuring greater security and ease of cross-border identity verification.
APDI's foundational principles are grounded in three core values that will guide its mission to build a more secure and inclusive digital identity ecosystem:
With over 4.78 billion people across 36 countries potentially benefiting from these initiatives, the formation of APDI is set to have a transformative impact on the digital identity landscape in the Asia-Pacific region.
