Cheehoo, an independent animation company, has secured $10 million in funding, marking a significant milestone in its mission to reshape the animation industry. The round was led by Greycroft, with participation from Point72 Ventures, Basis Set, Headline Asia, Powerhouse Capital, Playground Productions, and Rideback. Named after the Hawaiian expression for “cheer,” Cheehoo blends the artistry of Hollywood with the technological advancements of Silicon Valley. Its platform empowers creators by integrating AI into animation workflows, making production faster, more efficient, and more collaborative.
Cheehoo is led by a team of industry veterans. CEO Michael LoFaso, former DreamWorks Animation president Chris deFaria, and Netflix’s chairman of film, Dan Lin, bring decades of experience in animation and storytelling. Joining them are co-founders Hubert Tsai and Wei-Cheng Kuo, whose expertise in AI and robotics adds a technological edge to the company’s vision.
The team’s impressive portfolio includes blockbuster films such as It, How to Train Your Dragon, Aladdin, The Lego Movie, Sherlock Holmes, Gravity, and Happy Feet. This diverse background enables Cheehoo to address the animation industry’s challenges from both creative and technical perspectives.
“We’re building a bridge between technology and entertainment,” says Hubert Tsai. “Animation is an art, but it’s also a labor-intensive process. Our tools are designed to give creators more time to focus on storytelling by reducing the manual workload.”
Traditional animation is notoriously time-consuming and expensive. Every frame of a scene often requires hours of work, and the need for constant revisions can delay production timelines by weeks. Cheehoo’s platform leverages AI to streamline these processes, automating repetitive tasks and enhancing communication among teams.
“For example, creating a 15-second animation layout could take an entire week,” explains Hubert Tsai. “With our tools, that same task can be done in 40 minutes. The AI allows users to input text instructions, such as ‘make the character wave,’ and it handles the details, freeing up animators to focus on more complex aspects of their projects.”
This efficiency not only saves time but also reduces costs. Co-founder Wei-Cheng Kuo adds, “Studios spend millions on proof-of-concept stages. Our tools can cut those costs dramatically by automating and accelerating early-stage visual development.”
Cheehoo’s platform is designed to improve collaboration within animation teams. Traditionally, animators, directors, and producers must navigate a cumbersome process of back-and-forth communication to finalize scenes. Cheehoo’s tools centralize this communication, making it easier for teams to share feedback and make adjustments in real-time.
“Our platform acts as a shared space for creators,” says Hubert Tsai. “Instead of working in isolation, animators and directors can collaborate seamlessly, ensuring the creative vision stays intact.”
By simplifying workflows and improving communication, Cheehoo is addressing a critical pain point in the industry: the disconnect between creative and technical teams.
Cheehoo’s approach extends beyond offering tools. The company is also developing its own animated content, which allows it to refine its technology based on real-world production needs. This dual focus ensures that Cheehoo’s tools are not only innovative but also practical for professional animation studios.
For instance, the company’s AI capabilities enable creators to quickly transform 2D concepts into detailed 3D animations. This flexibility allows studios to experiment with new ideas without the fear of overshooting budgets or timelines.
Another major aspect of Cheehoo’s platform is IP management. Animation studios often face challenges when trying to reuse assets for sequels or spin-offs. Cheehoo’s tools make it easier to store, manage, and adapt these assets, reducing costs significantly. “Studios can save up to 75-80% on production costs when reusing IP,” explains Wei-Cheng Kuo. “Our platform ensures that past work remains accessible and adaptable, paving the way for more sustainable animation production.”
Cheehoo’s vision is to create a world where technology enhances creativity rather than replacing it. By combining AI-driven efficiency with the artistry of storytelling, the company is setting a new standard for animation. “We want to make it easier for creators to tell their stories,” says Hubert Tsai. “The entertainment industry has long been separated from the tech world. Our goal is to bring these two fields together in a way that benefits everyone.”
Cheehoo is transforming animation by combining smart tools, industry experience, and a passion for storytelling. Their platform helps creators save time, cut costs, and bring inspiring animated stories to life for audiences everywhere.
