On February 14, Appier, a leading MarTech company, announced its financial results for Fiscal Year 2024, with revenue hitting a historic high of ¥34.1 billion (a 29% year-on-year increase). This marks a nearly 2.7x growth since its IPO, when its revenue was just ¥12.7 billion in FY2021.
The main growth drivers came from the U.S. and EMEA regions (up 45% year-on-year), while the once-dominant Northeast Asia market also saw a solid 34% increase. Digital content (such as gaming) and e-commerce continue to be the primary sectors driving growth.
Appier remains optimistic about its revenue growth and forecasts a doubling of its revenue to ¥70 billion by FY2027.
However, beyond the impressive financials, there’s another “number” and “concept” from the earnings call that are even more noteworthy.
In FY2024, Appier had a total of 708 employees, a modest increase of just 2 people compared to the 706 employees the previous year. While Appier has always been cautious about expanding its workforce, over the past five years, employee growth has typically been around 45 people per year at the minimum.
Appier’s CEO and co-founder, Chih-Han Yu, explained that the reason for such slow growth in headcount for FY2024 is primarily due to AI improving employee efficiency, which has slowed down the need for new hires. "Appier already has products developed in collaboration between engineers and AI. Going forward, we’re focusing on quality, not quantity, when it comes to hiring software engineers. We’ll look for talent that can work alongside AI to co-develop solutions," he said.
Beyond Engineers, AI is Also Being Integrated Across Operations to Boost Efficiency.
Apart from engineers, AI is also being implemented in various operational areas, primarily with the goal of enhancing efficiency. Appier has previously shared that departments like HR and finance are already using AI-powered tools to accelerate their workflows.
Rather than thinking of AI as a tool to "replace human labor," the focus is on how existing staff can become more powerful with AI. Software engineering, in particular, has seen some of the most obvious changes in recent years.
In a report released by the AI startup Anthropic on February 10, 2025, they analyzed 1 million Claude conversations, categorizing them by question type. 37.2% of those questions were related to computer and math fields, far exceeding all other categories. Interestingly, the people working in these fields only make up 3.4% of the U.S. workforce.
While it’s important to consider the inherent limitations of language models and chatbots (which are naturally better at handling computer and math-related questions), this statistic reflects a trend: a tiny group of people is using AI on a massive scale. These are the areas that will be most impacted by AI, and it’s a key reason behind Appier's slow pace of recruitment—especially in the engineering field, as Chih-Han Yu mentioned. The existing workforce, empowered by AI, has become stronger, more efficient, and able to handle more work.
Next, Appier Acquires French Startup AdCreative.ai for $38.7 Million, Enhancing Creative Asset Generation
Appier recently acquired the French startup AdCreative.ai for $38.7 million, a company specialized in generating creative assets. For example, AdCreative.ai can replace backgrounds for products like lipsticks, create dynamic ads with backgrounds for items like burgers, or even generate playable interactive ad content.
While Appier already has similar technology for simple static background replacement, the acquisition allows for more advanced capabilities. Chih-Han Yu explained, “We do have technology for replacing product backgrounds, but it’s not as fine-tuned as AdCreative.ai’s. Plus, they offer dynamic images, which we didn’t have before. AdCreative.ai allows us to skip starting from scratch on this.”
The key takeaway here is that AdCreative.ai’s clients are mostly from the consumer goods sector, which is quite different from Appier’s traditional clientele. “What we have is audience data, while AdCreative.ai has the data on these creative assets,” said Chih-Han Yu. This acquisition opens new doors for Appier, bringing in fresh creative capabilities that complement their existing strengths in data-driven marketing.
From the diagram above, it can be seen that if the AI ecosystem is divided into hardware layer, basic model/general layer, and application layer, Appier is positioned at the application layer. Excluding hardware infrastructure, Taiwan is already an important part of the supply chain, and most Taiwanese software companies are also in the application layer (if we exclude system integrators).
After the launch of DeepSeek, it stirred up a lot of excitement. The benefits brought to the AI ecosystem are “getting a good deal”—lower API costs, more open-source models. “We can access better models at a lower cost. As customers pay for performance improvements and model costs decrease, the application layer can make more money,” said Chih-Han Yu.
Think AI applications have already blossomed everywhere? The explosion is still ongoing. “This trend is especially helpful for companies in the application layer, particularly those in the growth stage,” Chih-Han Yu explained.
In the competition within the application layer, the key lies in “data barriers,” “domain knowledge,” and “industry models.” This also explains why Appier acquired AdCreative.ai. As AI technology grows, technologies similar to AdCreative.ai will eventually become widely available. Every day, China and the U.S. are releasing more advanced image generation models, but what will differentiate companies in the application layer is the data, knowledge, and tuned models they possess, which will be the core of their differentiated services.
Appier’s annual revenue is at an all-time high, and its target of ¥70 billion by FY2027 seems ambitious. However, what’s truly worth paying attention to may not be these “obvious” financial results, but how Appier is adjusting itself amid the AI revolution. These details, more than the numbers on a financial report, reveal how AI is transforming not just a company, but the entire industry.
