On February 19th, Gavin Wood, best known as a co-founder of Ethereum and also the founder of Polkadot, spoke at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) in Taipei.
Gavin Wood’s talk focused on JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine), a new technology aimed at improving blockchain scalability and efficiency. He discussed how JAM could address challenges within the Web3 ecosystem and how it builds upon existing platforms like Polkadot.
Gavin Wood explained the journey of blockchain technology. Bitcoin, he said, focuses on payments, while Ethereum introduced smart contracts—basically creating a decentralized computer. Polkadot was designed to help different blockchains communicate with each other.
Building on Polkadot, JAM takes blockchain technology to the next level. In simple terms, JAM is a new "operating system" for Web3, making blockchain technology faster, more flexible, and easier to use.
Gavin Wood described JAM as a major upgrade to Polkadot, similar to upgrading from an old computer system (like Windows 98) to a new one (like Windows 10). This change makes Polkadot more powerful and able to run more types of Web3 applications, much like how modern computers can handle many different programs.
One of JAM’s key features is that it makes Polkadot run much faster and more efficiently. It’s like upgrading a computer’s processor to make everything work smoother. JAM also uses cloud technology, allowing users to access data easily, anytime they need it.
JAM turns Polkadot from a platform that only runs blockchain applications into one that can handle many different Web3 applications. This gives developers the freedom to build a wider range of projects.
The details of JAM’s technology are explained in the "Gray Book," a guide that outlines how JAM will change Web3. JAM’s new features make it more stable and faster. It uses a shared database, so data is easy to access, and it has a smarter "processor" for better performance. Additionally, JAM’s pricing system has changed: instead of charging for each transaction, it now charges based on how long it’s used, similar to a cloud subscription.
Ultimately, JAM’s goal is to create a "Web3 cloud computer" that is powerful, easy to use, and available to everyone. It aims to solve many of the problems Web3 faces today, like usability and scalability. With JAM, Polkadot will become more flexible, helping Web3 grow, become more efficient, and reach a wider audience.
By introducing JAM, Gavin Wood hopes to take Web3 to the next level, making it an important part of everyday life. This technology could be the breakthrough Web3 needs to move forward, changing how we interact with blockchain and decentralized systems.
