Micron, one of the leading memory manufacturers in the United States, announced that it has appointed Mark Liu, the former chairman of TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), to its board of directors.
Micron noted that "Mark Liu is a visionary leader with deep technical expertise and business insight. He brings decades of experience leading one of the world's most advanced and complex semiconductor companies, with a particular focus on operating large-scale wafer fabs."
Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron’s Chairman, President, and CEO, added, "His experience will help guide Micron as we scale our business to meet the growth opportunities driven by AI, from data centers to edge devices."
Mark Liu spent over 30 years at TSMC, holding various key leadership positions, including Senior Vice President (2004-2012), Executive Vice General Manager and Co-COO (2012-2013), CEO and Co-CEO (2013-2018), and Chairman (2018-2024).
Under his leadership, along with the efforts of the executive team, TSMC became the largest semiconductor foundry in the world.
Currently, Mark Liu serves as the Chairman of the multi-strategy investment fund J&M Copper Beech Ventures and is also the founder of the Technology Competitiveness and Industry Policy Center (TCIP) at the University of California, Berkeley.
His career began at Intel, where he contributed to the development of the company’s 32-bit microprocessor technology. He later joined AT&T Bell Labs, focusing on advanced high-speed electronics research. Liu also holds board positions on the UC Berkeley Engineering Advisory Council.
In addition, Micron announced that Christie Simons, a senior audit and assurance partner at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu who will retire in May 2025, will also join its board of directors.
Lynn Dugle, Micron’s Lead Independent Director, said, “I am thrilled to welcome Mark Liu and Christie to Micron’s Board of Directors. Mark’s executive experience at the world’s largest semiconductor foundry, along with Christie’s extensive work providing services to global semiconductor companies, adds invaluable strength to our board. We look forward to their contributions as we continue to position Micron for long-term success."
The memory market, which struggled throughout 2023, has shown strong recovery this year. A major driver of this resurgence is the growing demand in the AI market, which has led to a massive surge in demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Data center DRAM and SSDs (solid-state drives, made with NAND technology) are in high demand, driving this memory market boom.
On February 26, Micron announced that it has begun shipping samples of its most advanced DRAM technology, the 1-gamma (1γ) node, to partners and customers for validation. This new technology offers improved performance, lower power consumption, and higher bit density. The DRAM chips will be produced in collaboration with Micron’s facilities in Taiwan and Hiroshima, Japan.
Micron's 1γ DRAM is based on the sixth-generation 10nm process node and is the first to utilize extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. The applications for this technology range from data centers to AI-powered PCs, mobile devices, automotive systems, and gaming.
Additionally, Micron provided an update on its HBM4 and HBM4E plans. The HBM4 memory is expected to begin mass production in 2026, while the HBM4E variant is anticipated to be available around 2027-2028.
Micron is a major player in the memory industry, and this leadership appointment signals its commitment to advancing cutting-edge technologies.
With Mark Liu’s extensive background in semiconductor manufacturing and his leadership at TSMC, this move also highlights the growing importance of international collaboration in the semiconductor field.
The strong growth in AI and machine learning is also a key trend shaping the memory market. As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into various industries, the need for high-performance memory solutions is expected to grow exponentially.
Micron’s innovations, particularly in DRAM and HBM, are designed to meet the needs of these advanced applications, further cementing the company’s role as a leader in the global memory space.
