Valtec, a startup focused on using AI to improve commercial fishing, has successfully raised US$2M in its Pre-Seed funding round. SparkLabs Taiwan played a key role in supporting the round, helping to bring in additional investors, including Wavemaker VC and DRONE FUND.
The company aims to bring efficiency and sustainability to the fishing industry through its technology.
Valtec applies AI systems combined with fishing sensors such as bird radar, sonar, satellite data, and drone footage to enhance tuna fishing operations. These tools help fishing companies reduce fuel usage, improve efficiency, and minimize environmental impact.
Valtec’s CEO and co-founder, John Keh, has a background as a US Air Force drone operator and has worked in startups, including playing a role in growing Caviar, a food delivery service. Additionally, he led business intelligence teams at Uber Eats in the US and Canada.
Alongside John Keh, Jerry C. L., one of Valtec’s co-founders, brings scientific expertise with a PhD in bio-fluid mechanics and AI, as well as a background in oceanography. Jerry’s previous work with the Office of Naval Research further contributes to Valtec’s innovative approach to sustainable fishing.
John Keh shared, “At Valtec, we are merging my deep-rooted experience in the food supply chain and food delivery industry with my experience in advanced drone operations from my time in the US Air Force. Our mission is to harness cutting-edge technology to ensure a sustainable and responsible fish supply, aiming to nourish communities worldwide while preserving our oceans for future generations."
The company raised funds from several investors, including Sparklabs Taiwan, Wavemaker VC, and DRONE FUND, as well as angel investors like Kai Huang (founder of Guitar Hero) and Kevin Lin (co-founder of Twitch).
Valtec’s primary goal is to improve fishing practices. The company uses AI to reduce bycatch, increase operational efficiency, and promote responsible fishing to protect marine ecosystems. The recent funding will help Valtec continue product development, expand the team, and scale its operations.
Since closing its US$2M Pre-Seed round, Valtec has expanded its team, growing from four employees to nearly 18. The team is working to accelerate the company’s development and bring its product to more customers.
Valtec is preparing for a second deployment with a Filipino customer in Papua New Guinea, following a successful first sea trial. The company is working to address challenges from the first deployment and refine its system for broader use.
Valtec is also planning to raise a seed round of US$4-5 million to support further product development and deployment. These funds will help cover the costs of new deployments and improve the technology that supports sustainable fishing practices.
