Over the past year, the global AI industry has experienced a significant shift, moving from breakthroughs in models to deeper applications. Technologies like large language models (LLM), reasoning models, and multimodal systems are no longer controlled by just a few tech giants.
The release of open-source models has significantly reduced implementation costs for businesses, making AI applications more cost-effective across various fields. Additionally, the modularity and automation of AI toolchains have transformed many AI labs into new types of business engines, with real-world deployments already underway in areas such as customer service automation, predictive modeling, vibe coding, and multilingual marketing content.
In the face of this wave of change, for local industries in Taiwan, is it more of a crisis or an opportunity?
Although Taiwan boasts a highly competitive semiconductor and ICT industry, with a 59.0% year-over-year increase in exports of information and communication technology and audiovisual products in 2024, driven largely by the growing demand for AI servers and chips, Taiwan still faces multiple challenges.
Firstly, there is a shortage of computing resources, particularly a lack of high-end GPUs, which has become a bottleneck for training local models.
Secondly, the difficulty in accessing data has made the situation even worse—compared to China, Taiwan lacks a large amount of Traditional Chinese training data, and regulations restricting data usage further exacerbate the problem.
What’s even more concerning is the brain drain, as many top technical talents are being poached by international giants like NVIDIA, Meta, and Google. In this environment, many local project teams in Taiwan face reduced funding and the departure of core members, leaving them almost "unable to continue."
"At the most crucial moment for AI startups globally, Taiwan has almost no entrepreneurial talent capable of combining technology with business to create successful ventures. This is a national security issue." Lee-Feng Chien, Chairman of the Judging Panel for the 2025 Taiwan AI Awards
For Taiwan to establish itself in the AI era, it needs a more macro-level strategic mindset. While seeking commercial success, it must also consider a truly executable national AI strategy. By combining industry knowledge, international perspectives, and technological innovation, Taiwan can maintain a place in the global competition of the AI era.
This is also the reason why the 'Taiwan AI Awards' are being organized again in 2025: it's not just an award, but a mirror and a starting point. We hope that through this award, we can showcase and present Taiwan's representative achievements in AI applications and innovation over the past year, demonstrating to both domestic and international audiences that Taiwan is not only chasing technology trends but also a hub for turning AI technology into reality.
Facing competition from global AI giants, Taiwanese AI companies are seeking strategies to differentiate themselves. The first step is to deepen the integration of industry knowledge with AI. The period from 2024 to 2025 will be a year where Taiwan's AI teams dive even deeper into various industries. Now, let’s get to know the AI innovators who are making Taiwan shine.
