National Development Council(NDC) published a report indicating that Taiwan needs AI talents urgently. The percentage of people in demand to the employed population reached 13.9%, which is the highest among all the industries.
To get a clear picture of what kind of talents do the industries need, NDC collaborates with nine government departments including Ministry of Interior, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Council of Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Culture of Taiwan, Ministry of Science and Technology, and Financial Supervisory Commission, to conduct the demand of professionals from the 21 key industries.
From the report, the top three sectors that have the strongest demand for talents are AI application services. The percentage of "people in demand" to the "employed population" is 13.9%, offshore wind power, 13.7%, and IC design, 11.7%.
According to the report, not having enough graduates in these industries is the main reason that explains the shortage of talents. The second reason is that the current employees are not equipped with the skills.
The development of AI brings lots of new products, new solutions, and business models to the market. According to Statista, AI-related business' market size has reached $(USD)22.5 billion in 2020, growing 53.8% from 2019. Furthermore, the market size might top $(USD)126 billion in 2025.
NDC estimates that on average, the industry will hire 2233~2730 employees per year in the next three years, and the percentage of "people in demand" to the "employed population" is 12.9%~14.9%, which implies an urgent need for new talents, including AI application engineers, data engineers, data scientists, and AI project managers.
Actually, the whole information services industry has a strong demand for professionals. Because of the innovations of AI algorithms, data application tools, blockchain, and 5G, more and more new business services have been created. At least half of the surveyed enterprises believe that the market size will keep growing in the next two years. NDC estimates that, on average, information services businesses will hire around 4,567~ 5,047 employees per year in the next three years. The percentage of "people in demand" to the "employed population" is 8.2%.
