Feeling hungry? When you're searching for a place to eat, do you reach for Google Maps or scroll through your favorite social media platform?
For Generation Z, the go-to platforms are Instagram or TikTok. According to Forbes' research, 67% of young people aged 18 to 24 prefer Instagram for searching information. This underscores the importance for restaurant operators to actively manage their social media presence to capture the attention of younger consumers.
However, many small, independently operated restaurants struggle with social media management due to lack of marketing experience. Crafting engaging posts is just the beginning; effective social media marketing involves storytelling and brand building to create a unique appeal.
This is where Colega AI comes in. Colega AI was started by an American entrepreneur, Eric Fung, who previously co-founded an AI startup backed by Y combinator. Using his experience, he founded Colega AI to solve problems faced by restaurants. Colega AI uses AI technology to help businesses manage their social media, making it easier for them to connect with customers and build their brand.
Colega AI aims to address these challenges by providing a dedicated AI powered social media manager that automatically generates tailored social media content based on a restaurant's brand tone, target audience, and current events. This enables even novice users to effortlessly attract traffic and convey their brand story.
Its AI automatically generates tailored content that aligns with your brand identity, engages with followers by responding to comments and messages, and provides advice on creating posts related to local events.
For example, if there is a Taylor Swift concert near your restaurant, Colega AI will suggest writing a caption accordingly for your post.
It also offers real-time analytics, allowing you to track performance metrics and gain insights from customer Google reviews. You can schedule posts for immediate or future publishing, optimizing timing based on customer behavior, location, and business trends.
Additionally, its AI image detection identifies food items for enhanced visual content, while it can incorporate local events or weather conditions into captions, ensuring posts remain relevant and engaging.
Colega AI is currently partnering with Meta, allowing seamless posting of content directly to Facebook and Instagram. This collaboration enables restaurants to manage their social media effortlessly, reaching a wider audience with minimal effort.
Social media has become a critical marketing channel for restaurant owners. Eric Fung was born and raised in the US to Hong Kong parents. Eric spent 15 years in Silicon Valley, gaining experience at companies like Oracle and Dell. He owns multiple restaurants himself, which is why he best understands the difficulties restaurant owners face.
"Social media is now the most important marketing channel for businesses," Eric emphasizes. "Instagram has even surpassed Google as the primary search engine for Gen Z to find local businesses."
Eric experienced firsthand the pivotal role of digital presence during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many businesses struggled due to physical restrictions. His own business nearly closed down during the lockdown because it was not discoverable online. He also notes that "50% of small and medium-sized business (SMB) accounts on social media are inactive." Eric realized that businesses with a strong online presence could drive traffic and sales, even in challenging times.
"Why is it challenging? Current marketing tools are made for professional marketers, not everyday business owners," Eric explains. "Hiring a marketing agency is costly, and errors due to misunderstanding can lead to brand inconsistencies."
Eric previously hired a social media manager for $2,000USD a month but had a negative experience. This motivated him to create Colega AI, focusing on content generation tailored to brand identity, follower engagement through automated replies, and providing insights from customer reviews and analytics.
The founding team includes Daphne Hsu, CMO, former Head of Business Development for Uber's APAC team and Uber's first employee in Taiwan. Adnan Azmat, CTO, who brings deep expertise in AI and machine learning from his roles at Microsoft and as an AI researcher at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Kaiden Sin, CPO, an experienced engineering leader from Standard Chartered and an Entrepreneur First alumnus.
When asked about why coming to Taiwan for expanding the company, Daphne Hsu, CMO of Colega AI explains "Taiwan is an AI hub, the country has excellent engineers and business experts from top universities. Its startup scene is quickly expanding, drawing Taiwanese professionals from Silicon Valley to start new businesses."
Their target audience primarily includes restaurants, capitalizing on Taiwan's rich food culture and abundance of dining establishments. "Previously, Taiwanese engineers sought opportunities in Silicon Valley, but now they're returning to Taiwan to build companies," Daphne notes.
Colega AI plans to raise a $2 million seed round to enter the Taiwan and Japan markets next year, with technology optimized for online operations. The team currently consists of five members.
Future plans include smarter AI for editing videos and creating reels, emphasizing automation for business owners.
The AI features image recognition for food and can incorporate local events or weather into captions. Users register by email and company name, pinpoint their location on Google Maps, and connect IG (business account) and FB (create an account). Interaction is available in English and Chinese via LINE QR code.
"The monthly fee ranges from $50 to $200 USD per month, but a free trial is available," Eric mentions. "Feedback is crucial to us." With collaborations with several top restaurant brands since launching a few weeks ago, Colega AI aims to empower business owners to focus on both operations and marketing.
"I come from Silicon Valley; if you say you want to build a spaceship to go to Mars, they'll say, 'Okay, go ahead'. You have to dream big and do not be afraid to do something you have never done before" Eric concludes.
