The largest international startup event in Asia, the "Meet Taipei Innovation and Entrepreneurship Carnival," concluded on November 23. This year, the event was centered around the theme "TAIWAN+1," focusing on three key areas: AI applications, deep technology, and internationalization. The event explored Taiwan's international standing and attracted 460 startup teams, including more than 100 international startups from over 18 countries.
The event also saw participation from 9 accelerators, and several government entities, including the National Development Council, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Small and Medium Enterprise Administration, Ministry of Digital Affairs, Taiwan Stock Exchange, National Development Council, and local governments from seven cities.
Over three days, the event hosted 205 demo pitches and 376 matchmaking sessions, facilitating exchanges between startups and businesses, both local and international. The event attracted over 55,000 visitors who witnessed the development of Taiwan's startup ecosystem.
One of the main highlights of this year’s Meet Taipei was the record number of international startups, making up 25% of all participants. A total of 106 startups from 18 countries, including Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Vietnam, and Canada, joined the event. This shows that Taiwan is becoming more popular with global startups, thanks to its strong semiconductor industry and skilled tech workforce, especially in the AI era.
For example, IPIN LABS, a Korean startup providing AI-powered indoor positioning solutions, highlighted that Taiwan's strong manufacturing and ICT industries were major reasons for participating in Meet Taipei. Additionally, Taiwan’s comprehensive support programs and resources for international startups make it a highly attractive destination for companies looking to expand into new markets.
Building on this, exhibitors like John A. Rudd, Co-founder and Chief Scientific Advisor at Gut Rhythm, shared their eagerness to connect with investors across Asia. This further underscores Meet Taipei's importance as a platform that not only showcases innovation but also facilitates meaningful international connections and business opportunities.
The Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan Kung Ming-hsin, announced that Taiwan had set up its first overseas startup hub in Tokyo this year, with a second opening in Silicon Valley in early 2024. This, alongside the more than 100 international startups attending Meet Taipei, is a clear indication that Taiwan is stepping into the global arena. Both Takashi Hattor, Deputy Representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, and American Institute in Taiwan’s Deputy Director General, Jeremy Cornforth, emphasized that Taiwan’s technological prowess and semiconductor resources will play a vital role in strengthening international exchanges in the future.
Meet Taipei also stood out because of its high-quality audience, including many industry professionals and important attendees. The event's Global Pavilion played a big role in encouraging international business connections, with many global teams finding real business opportunities during the exhibition. This highlights the value of the event as a platform for fostering real-world collaborations, making it more than just a showcase of innovations but a genuine space for forging meaningful commercial partnerships.
AI applications were prominently featured throughout the event, with both Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an visiting Meet Taipei to experience firsthand the innovative uses of AI technology. Experts like Leo Liu, co-founder of Xelerate Ventures, and James Kalani Lee, General Manager of Google Cloud's Startup and AI division, advised Taiwanese startups to focus on identifying specific pain points and market niches in AI, which will help sharpen their focus.
The "Neo Star Demo Show" a key event of Meet Taipei, showcased Taiwan’s most outstanding startups. This year, Cool Innovation, which specializes in low-temperature and high-humidity cold storage technology, Alpha Intelligence Manifolds, an AI image recognition startup focused on diagnosing cardiovascular diseases and chronic illnesses, and JelloX Biotech, which develops 3D pathology imaging technology, were recognized as the top three. These teams demonstrated the diverse range of Taiwan’s technological innovations, with two of the top three being from the biotech and medical fields—reinforcing the perspectives shared by forum speakers on Taiwan’s future development.
The event was also a success thanks to the support of 9 accelerators, and several government agencies, which helped create more opportunities for networking and business growth. Over the three days, events like the Chunghwa Telecom 5G Accelerator Demo Day, KPMG workshops, and Dragons' Chamber pitching sessions were held. These activities led to 205 demo pitches and 376 matchmaking sessions between startups, businesses, and investors, showing the strong backing Taiwan’s startup ecosystem gets from both the government and businesses.
